What does a camp day look like?
Each day of camp builds upon the previous day’s lessons and experiences. Mornings begin with a chalk talk session where instructors review the day’s goals, weather conditions, and activities. Campers then head to the beach house area to prepare and rig their boats before launching for their on-the-water sailing session.
After sailing, students work together to de-rig and clean their boats and equipment before wrapping up the day with a group debrief led by their instructor.
What happens if it rains or storms?
The Melges Watersports Center team’s first priority is safety. In the event of inclement weather, camp activities may transition from on-the-water sailing to indoor sailing theory, seamanship lessons, games, and educational activities.
What kind of boats will campers be using?
Campers will primarily sail the Melges Spark, a modern and approachable training dinghy designed specifically for youth sailors.
What will campers learn?
Campers will build a strong foundation in sailing through hands-on learning both on and off the water. Skills covered may include:
- Basic sail trim and boat handling
- Steering and maneuvering
- Wind awareness and points of sail
- Water safety and seamanship
- Teamwork and communication
- Rigging and de-rigging procedures
How old should campers be?
7-12 years old.
Is lunch provided?
No. We ask that campers arrive each day with enough food, snacks, and water to sustain themselves throughout the day.
What is the instructor-to-student ratio?
Our target instructor-to-student ratio is approximately 1:10.
