Fall Sailing Program

Spark Sailing Academy

The Melges Watersports Center Spark Sailing Academy is a 10-week program designed for students ages 7–12. Using the new Melges Spark, students will develop confidence on the water while learning sailing fundamentals, seamanship, teamwork and more in a fun and supportive setting.

Whether students are stepping into a sailboat for the first time or continuing after summer camp, this program provides a structured pathway to build sailing skills throughout the school year.

We are offering 2 time sessions. The morning session is our Homeschool Sailing Academy, designed for homeschool students and families. Registration can be done through the Step Up for Students scholarship program or done through the link below.

Our afternoon session is our After School Sailing Academy, which is geared toward students attending traditional schools.

What does a camp day look like?

Each day of camp builds upon previous class's lessons and experiences. Camp begins with a chalk talk session where instructors review the day’s goals, weather conditions, and activities. Campers then head to the beach house area to prepare and rig their boats before launching for their on-the-water sailing session.

After sailing, students work together to de-rig and clean their boats and equipment before wrapping up the day with a group debrief led by their instructor.

What happens if it rains or storms?

The Melges Watersports Center team’s first priority is safety. In the event of inclement weather, camp activities may transition from on-the-water sailing to indoor sailing theory, seamanship lessons, games, and educational activities.

What kind of boats will campers be using?

Campers will primarily sail the Melges Spark, a modern and approachable training dinghy designed specifically for youth sailors.

What will campers learn?

Campers will build a strong foundation in sailing through hands-on learning both on and off the water. Skills covered may include:

  • Basic sail trim and boat handling
  • Steering and maneuvering
  • Wind awareness and points of sail
  • Water safety and seamanship
  • Teamwork and communication
  • Rigging and de-rigging procedures
How old should campers be?

7-12 years old.

Is lunch provided?

No. We ask that campers arrive each day with enough food, snacks, and water to sustain themselves throughout the day.

What is the instructor-to-student ratio?

Our target instructor-to-student ratio is approximately 1:10.
