Melges Watersports Center Welcomes RJ Porter as Director

Melges Performance Sailboats is excited to welcome RJ Porter to the Melges Watersports Center team in Merritt Island, FL. Porter joins the core members of the Melges Team, including Harry Melges III, Andy Burdick, and Eddie Cox.  

Porter, a 4x Melges 24 National Champion, 2x E Scow National Champion, College of Charleston Varsity Sailing alumni, and 2x Melges 17 National Champion, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Melges Watersports Center. 

“Sailing brings people of all ages together and harnesses a great sense of community,” said Porter. “The Center will be the perfect place to bring everyone together year-round, with plenty of opportunities for everyone."

For more than 75 years, Melges has built exceptional, high-quality boats and raced around the world. The Melges Team, known for its dedication, expertise, and achievements, is bringing that passion and excitement to a new series of clinics and regattas. 

“The Melges experience doesn’t end with a new boat,” Burdick added. “We are committed to providing customers with the resources and expertise to enjoy and improve their sailing experience.” 

Melges has long been known for creating an environment in which the sport of sailing can thrive through world-class events, exciting boats, and great parties. The Center aims to advance the sport by providing access to top-tier coaches and leading immersive learning opportunities. 

“We’ll be on the water for every event and be able to give sailors feedback in real-time, which is crucial to skill development. It’s so much easier to absorb information when you can see and make the changes right away,” explained Burdick. “When you feel yourself improving, it makes sailing that much more enjoyable.”
